If I were to buy a car from the 90's, which one of these should I buy?
Land Rover P38 (4.6 HSE)
BMW E34 (535i)
Alfa 164 (Super V6)
Subaru SVX
Assume they are all in near mint condition and have less than 45k miles.

Land Rover or BMW because hell yes. SVX is way cool but auto only.

They're very different cars so it depends what purpose it's for. If it's just cruising around I'd take the Rangey. The alfa if you want something fun to drive and the SVX if you want to stand out.

Sunday cruising.

alfa because telephone dials and italy

For me it's probably the alfa if it's only for weekends since it interests me the most.

The BMW since it is the most like the Lotus Carlton.

Tough choice between the Afla and the E34 for me. Although I always admired the SVX.

While I dig the SVX, I say the E34 is probably the better cruiser. So, that has my vote.

Sunday cruising? The Range Rover is the pick of this particular bunch for that.
- impecable ride
- generously appointed
- V8 sound and power
- you won't ruin resale value by driving it.
- neither of the other three are what i would call cruiser. they're comfortable, but still too sporty to waste like that.

How so?

Those telephone dials do look great.

6 cylinders, RWD. That is it though. If anyone said I could have any car from the 90s the answer would be the Lotus without a seconds though. I love that car.

I like it as well but we never got them over here, the closest thing I can get is an Omega 4.1.

I'm sure there was an Lotus Omega. In fact there 650 of them.

E34. Understated and awesome.

I like the Alfa, Bimmer, and Rover the best.

Range Rover no question, plus I know enough places where I can source replacement parts for cheap.

Of those, I would pick the Range Rover. That being said, iI used to own one and it was very much a love/hate relationship. I miss it a lot. But the repair costs could bankrupt you. The engines are shit and do not have "v8 power", my 4-cylinder 2000 C230k makes more power at the wheels than a rover v8. The engines fail randomly with no warning. Head gaskets are basically a maintenance item. BeCM's fail often. Air suspension doesn't have a single part that I would call reliable aside from the reservoir. Fuse boxes and relays like to melt. Ball joints, tie rid ends, steering dampers will likely need to be done. Those are the most common things, I'm leaving out a couple grand worth of other less common things that would still be worth worrying about. I've still considered getting another.

Every single person who owned one told me they loved it, and as I would only drive it on weekends I'm guessing (wildly) that reliability won't be such a big problem. But as I live in Brazil, replacement parts will be triple the price and really hard to find. I'm willing to sacrifice my bank account to own a P38.

I'm going bankrupt as a happy man.

If you had to choose only one car, a car to drive on weekends with the sunroof open, a car that you would treat as your only son, a car to last a lifetime even if unreliable, which of the 3 would you pick?
![]() 08/12/2014 at 21:28 |

That's easy. All 3 three great performers, luxurious cruisers, and supremely unreliable. But only one has the passion, soul, style, and inexplicable fizz of an Alfa Romeo; the Alfa Romeo. So that's my choice.

Black, blue, silver, red or burgundy?
![]() 08/12/2014 at 21:32 |

Red, of course. But if not, whichever one has a light (not grey/black) interior.

Looks like its going to be RR x Alfa, if I find a red one its alfa.

I love the Range Rover, but it doesn't really strike me as a "Sunday driver". I guess it could be though.

Don't say I didn't warn you!
